Register today for non-credit courses in Chinese Language, Culture, and Music. All classes are held on UNL’s City Campus with limited seating. Registration fees do include course materials and on-campus parking permits are available for weekday classes for $14.00. There will be no classes from March 14-27 due to spring break.

CICL 101 teaches students very basic Chinese language skills that are closely related to their everyday life such as: greeting others or responding to greetings from others; making simple expressions of their basic needs; giving others instructions by using a few words; and making simple requests or seeking for help.

CICI 102 is a sequential class to CICL 101. This course will teach more spoken Chinese and start to introduce Chinese culture to the class. It will help students to lay down a stronger foundation of listening, speaking, reading and basic writing skills in Chinese. After finishing this course, students will be able to make simple conversations on one's hobbies and daily-life routines, express their needs or give others instructions by using simple sentences, and able to speak Chinese more fluently.

CICL 201 is a sequential class to CICL 102. Language instructors will teach students to learn more practical Chinese language skills. The course contents cover more topics on Chinese culture. Teaching will also focus more on speaking and listening skills related to aspects of Chinese food, clothing, traveling and accommodation. Students will start to learn how to write some common Chinese characters. For instance, on how to order food in a Chinese restaurant; how to introduce their family and occupations; how to make and answer phone calls; how to ask for directions to places.

CICL 202 is a sequential class to CICL 201. Instructors will review previously learned grammars with students. The class is designed to help students sharpening their listening and speaking skills in Chinese, particularly emphasizes on making more accurate pronunciation of words and constructing correct sentences. Students will be able to expand their conversational skills on topics such as making an appointment, talking about their plans and schedules, doing shopping, and expressing their choices and preferences. A short supplementary introduction of Chinese culture will also be included.

CICL 301 is a continuing class to CICL 202 and is designed for students who are interested in developing more sophisticated Chinese language skills. The course presupposes a basic knowledge of Chinese pinyin, words, sentences, and grammar. Emphasis will be placed on using Mandarin proficiently when conducting conversations with native Chinese speakers. Upon finishing the course, students should be able to use Chinese to ask and give some directions, go shopping in Chinese stores, make conversations over the phone, read and write short notes and simple letters in Chinese. Students will likely be required to present a speech or presentation in Chinese at the end of course.

CICL 201 will start to use a level two children text book which introduces more vocabulary to students. This course will teach names of some countries of the world, school science subjects, changes of weather and seasons, and personal hobbies, etc. The instructor will encourage students to memorize some characters learned in each lesson, practice on conversations in Chinese with students during class to reinforce their listening and speaking skills.

CICL 202 is a sequential class to CICL 201. Besides teaching students more Chinese characters, the instructor will guide practical conversations on topics such as dining out, ordering food from menu, comparing styles of houses and knowing about their neighborhood and surroundings, etc. Students are encouraged to memorized about 100 Chinese characters upon finishing this class.

CICC 101 offers an exciting glimpse into Chinese culture, history and society. This course does not require any prior knowledge of Chinese and is open for anyone who is interested in expanding their knowledge of Chinese culture, history and heritage. The course offers an introduction of traditional Chinese culture and history, customs and virtues, arts and music, holidays and food, etc. Students are encouraged to do some hands-on activities during classes such as how to write Chinese, make dumplings and sing Chinese folk songs.

CICC 102 is a continuation course of CICC 101 with broader and deeper coverage on Chinese culture, history and society. Students are encouraged to do some hands-on activities during classes, such as how to write Chinese and learn about Chinese calligraphy, make Chinese dumpings or food, and sing Chinese folk songs.
CICC is a sequential class to CICL 201. It continues to teach students basic vocal skills and to motivate kids to enjoy and sing popular Chinese children's songs. The class is taught by Judy Li, a visiting Associate Professor of Music from the Three Gorge University in China.
