How Online Classes Work

Course Formats

Each course is delivered using any combination of resources below:

  • internet
  • email
  • videoconferencing
  • CD-ROM
  • Blackboard (online learning management system)

Types of Courses

In most cases, programs and certificates can be completed entirely at a distance.

You Set The Schedule

Most distance courses do not have a regular meeting time (known as asynchronous.)

These courses primarily use:

  • Internet
  • Email
  • Blackboard

Even though they do not have regularly scheduled meetings, you are still required to meet assignment and exam deadlines.

Class Exam Options

By registering for class through MyRed, you’ll be able to tell the type of exam associated with each course. Many courses will have both exam options available just select the course appropriate for your situation.

  • Online course with on-campus testing:
You take the online exam with a proctor at one of UNL’s testing centers.

  • Online course with NO on-campus testing:
Online exams are taken off-campus, supervised by an approved proctor.

We recommend taking exams during hours when the Information Services Computer Help Center is staffed in case you encounter any technical issues.

Class Schedules

Most online/distance courses follow the university semester calendar.
